The SOS Children's Village Karachi was opened in 1987 and comprises of 16 family homes and other essential facilities. It is situated on a 5 acres site in Malir, donated by the Government of Sindh. One of the major problems facing the management has been the lack of sweet water but, despite this, they have managed to maintain the gardens and provide the children an attractive environment. The children lead busy lives and, besides many extracurricular activities, are provided assistance with their studies. As in all projects, emphasis is laid on scholastic achievement as it is important that the children realize their full potential.
The SOS Medical Centre for Women and Children is situated within the premises and offers free medical services to the community. Regular immunization, Polio eradication campaign and regular antenatal checkups for the expecting women, keep people from the community regularly coming in. Recently, this Medical facility has been upgraded with the addition of an Ultra Sound Machine. A doctor is available on a daily basis.
SOS Hermann Gmeiner School was established in 1998. Presently catering the students from kindergarten to high school, operating double shifts with 1400 students on roll out of which 150 students are from SOS Karachi Village and the remaining are from the surrounding areas.
The academic performance of students at the school is excellent which reflects sustained efforts and the directions of qualified teachers in our institution.
On popular demand of the community, the school was upgraded to the capacity of intermediate level in the year 2007, in order to facilitate the students of the area to go directly to the university or vocational institutions and professional colleges after passing intermediate examination. Further expansion of the facility is planned to increase the capacity by adding another floor to the campus.
The newly constructed building of SOS Youth Home is situated in Malir Cantonment, Karachi, inaugurated by Mr. Helmet Kutin, President of SOS Kinderdorf International in February, 2010.
The Youth Home built over 2 acres of land consists of 4 dormitories each having 4 bedrooms, mentor room and a living room with the capacity of 48 boys. Dining, TV , Counseling and Computer rooms are situated in the Central Block and cater to all Youth Home boys. A Volley Ball court, Foot Ball ground and a Cricket pitch are providing a healthy sports opportunity for the development of the boys. Besides formal education, they also have computer, scouting and skill development facilities.
SOS TTI is located near Lalabad Goth in Korangi, Karachi and is accessible from Landhi and Korangi. The area is largely inhabited by factory workers, drivers, chowkidars, fishermen and individuals from low income groups. Its state-of-the-art building was designed by prominent architect, Habib Fida Ali. The purpose built campus consists of a central courtyard surrounded by spacious workshops, classrooms, an administrative unit and airy corridors. The Institute was inaugurated on 3rd February, 2010 by Justice Fakhruddin G. Ibrahim in the presence of Mr. Helmut Kutin, President of SOS Kinderdorf International, Austria.
The SOS TTI has designed a range of 6 months courses which are 20% theory and 80% practical. All courses have been approved by the Sindh Board of Technical Education. At the end of each course, students are tested by the board for certificate of graduation.
